Binky Trees and Castles

Hey everyone. It's been a great week. Highs and Lows and in betweens... Learned a lot, taught a lot (always great to be able to say!), and saw a lot of interesting stuff.

We taught an incredible guy named Mike. He referred himself after meeting the church at a festival on Bornholm, I think I've mentioned him before. Anyway he lives in Jægerspris, about forty five minutes away from us by car. He asked us if we could talk at the castle in Jægerspris... uhh... ja tak!

I ound out he's only twenty two... he looks a lot older haha. Basically he's super genuine and is honestly investigating the church with the intent to act on an answer he finds. He wants to have information, and is super smart! He told us all about the castle we were visiting and about how the King used to fish out of the castle window and would get super upset and punish people if he didn't catch a fish. Eventually one of the servants sat outside under the window with a couple of fish each day and would hook them onto the kings line without him knowing just to keep him happy! Eventually his wife died without having any kids so they burined her in this hill thing that kind of reminds me of a Hobbit house. Fun story for the day.

I want to help Mike find the answers he's looking so bad! He's a little nervous about joining the church for the simple reasons that his family and the country he lives in really don't appreciate people that have a religion like ours. Mike told me though that when I said the prayer at the end of a lesson he felt a calming force that allowed him to relax which was something unique. He also said that while he started the book of Mormon he was way drowsy and tired because reading always makes him that way... but as he began to read for one of the first times in his life the book actually gave him energy and woke him up! Crazy! I'm sooooooooo happy to finally see somebody actively noticing the spirit because of the efforts of the missionaries. In our first lesson he was nervous to say a prayer so I did it, but then later that week he said he felt a huge desire to pray so he did it right then and there, which happened to be in the shower haha. So he said the closing prayer while we were at the castle and is was awesome! Too bad he's going on vacation this next week.

There's another tradition the Danes have that I absolutely love. When a toddler is getting rid of their binky they take all the binkies they have and throw them onto a Binky Tree.

So randomly you'll see a tree somewhere that's just covered in hundreds of Binkies. It's great :) I guess it helps the kids accept the fact that they can't have their binky anymore.

We've also been talking to a family that said they'd come to church, but they didn't. Sad day. However we just bumped into them an hour ago while we were buying groceries at the store! They said their little girl got sick and so they couldn't come but that they are planning on coming this next week! Should be great. They're way awesome. We've taught a lot of other lessons to people this week but I can't remember anything sticking out... except that our friend Jakob is a high school teacher here in Denmark and he might have us come give a presentation to his classes in school! That would be way too much fun. I hope it all pans out, we'd be able to hand out like 19012904 Book(s) of Mormons(s) (In Danish it's just Mormons Bøger so there's no argument :P) I've never really done a public presentation on the Church to non-members.

We also visited a less active man who is actually brothers with the Stake President that fed me and my companions all the time back in Odense! His name is Per. He's super smart and has a massive testimony. I've learned a ton from talking with him and the ideas we discussed this week are something that I think will stick with me for a long time. I'm gonna try and break it down cause we talked for like an hour and a half about this...

Basically two different things can give us a ton of power over ourselves.
1) Focusing on the Principle instead of the Act
2) Applying the Mind Over Matter idea

I'm just now realizing as I type this that conveying what I learned in an email is ridiculously hard. I'll use an example.... maybe that'll make it easier. Let's say I want to lose weight. If I focus on what I have to do (working out and eating healthy) then it's going to suck and I'm going to be negative. I'm not going to want to make the changes and so I'm going to expect them to be hard and because of that it literally becomes harder. However if I focus on WHY then the thing becomes easier! If I realize that I'm eating better and working out BECAUSE I will be happier with a nicer body and a healthier lifestyle then I realize the short term sacrifice is something I want to do. Not something I HAVE to do, but something I want to do. Then we expect to enjoy making those sacrifices, and even if they're hard we know we want to do them and we can tell ourselves it's something good! Our minds are really incredible, they can be more powerful than our body. Suddenly we have the power to tell ourselves we enjoy these things, and even if we don't we can endure the short term sacrifice for the long term reward. Soon it becomes a habbit to live this new way. Because I want to enjoy exercise and dieting they become easier and because they're easier I enjoy them more. We can use this to over come addictions, habbits, accomplish large tasks, and basically anything. I hope this kind of made sense because I think it's incredible.

For example, instead of saying ''I want to finish my mission'' which requires existing for the next 10 months I can say ''I want to fulfill my purpose for the rest of my mission''. Suddenly I know why I'm doing the daily things I have to do, and I'm willing to make the sacrifice because I have a bigger purpose in mind. Then all the short term sacrifices become easier and I see results. I enjoy myself more, and I can enjoy or endure well the trials I have to face on a daily basis as long as I'm diligent in it all. The biggest part is prayer, and involving the saviour to help make the mental adjustments.

We all have to face trials in some way or another, but if we realize WHY we're facing them they become easier to benefit from and to allow our mind to triumph over the physical part of us that wants to give up! See Alma 62:41 for an example.

Wow, that was long. Hope it helps someone.

My parents said they want something about my every day life... so basically I eat sandwhiches all the time. They are one of the few things that doesn't turn my stomach inside out, and because of that vegetable are my new favorite thing. Yes Mom... I eat cucumbers and tomatoes on my sandwhiches. Hope you're proud ;) Besides that walk and bike through a forest a lot as a shortcut to the nearby apartment complexes. We stop by a lot of people who usually aren't home, talk to people on the way who usually only let us get out half a sentence before they see our name tags and say Nej Tak! and it's super super hot lately. I only have two short sleeve shirts! Apparently it's waaaaaaaay hotter than it normally ever gets and it is incredibly humid. Humidity = Sadness. I want the dry air back. Back when I could walk outside in the snow in shorts and be fine! We have a hammock in our apartment which is fun. Every thursday and Sunday we drive pass the beautiful Danish oceanside on our way to the city of Roskilde. Hope that helps a little bit :) We can talk more on Christmas I guess haha.

Love you all! Stay awesome

The Bikers Bible

Well I've been in the library for a while now. We got interrupted a little bit during emailing. There's a guy here who I talk with every now and again while emailing who's from Poland. We saw him on the street and had a street lesson type thing and agreed we could talk further next time we were in the library. Well he was here today. He's Jehovah Witness. It ended up getting.... well not quite bashy but just not the ideal spirit was there. He thought he had every answer possible. He gave me an article showing differences between the Bible and the Book of Mormon and said that there were differences, our book is wrong, end of story. I explained each one to him without blinking and he seemed to be unsure of himself and so he reverted to saying that we don't know God's real name. I told him we did, and he asked what it was. I told him I'd prefer not to talk about it in the middle of the library as it is something we hold sacred. He said our church was bad cause we kept it secret. I tried explaining the difference between secret and sacred but he wouldn't hear it... I was trying to tell him that instead of doing all this weird research he'd been doing to find the true name of God and stuff that he could just ask God like one friend would to another, or perhaps better, as a son would his father. While I was trying to get that across a Danish man came up and said the Polish guy was talking way too loud and that we shouldn't talk about all this ridiculous ''løgn'' in public anyway. (Løgn kind of means that it's a joke or nonsense). The Polish guy got angry and told the Dane to sit back down... The last thing I wanted was for us to be involved in a fight in a public library so I told the Dane we'd talk quieter, thanked him for letting us know we were bothering him, and asked the Polish man if we could talk somewhere else in a few days. It worked and they left each other alone... the Polish guy told me he wasn't afraid of the Dane and we should just keep talking and started to open his Bible. I said the reason we didn't want to bother him wasn't because we were scared but because we wanted to be respectful and friendly to those around us. Hopefully he understood =) I think that's one of the first times I've had to be a mediator between two adults... C'mon people! We were talking about Christ! Why let that start a bunch of unchrist-like feelings?!

Anywho. That happened about thirty seconds ago. Good thing Elder Burton had my back, this kid has a big heart.

It's bright as well :)

Haha we've had a great time together. I don't think I've ever met a kid with a more positive attitude. Elder Burton is always happy! It's makes it way easier to keep a positive attitude when your companion is always happy. So that's good.

We've also had quite a few interesting stories already in our companionship. We're teaching the leader of a Christian Biker Group! He gave me one of his Bibles haha, it's called the ''Biker Bible''

It's way more hardcore than my Bible. This Bible has stories of people who used to be in bad situations and were part of Biker gangs but then found Jesus and converted to Christianity. Our investigator has his story in it! His name is Leif.

It says ''Former President of 666, now I serve Jesus!'' and that's his picture. In between the Biker stories it has the New Testament written in Every Day Danish so it's easier for your everyday Dane to understand. It's also full of prayers already written down by members of the Biker gang to help provide inspiration for those who are seeking answers but aren't sure how to word their pleas for help. There's a specific prayer you can use to help you drive your motorcylce safely, one to help free you from sexual abuse, and one just to help you get faith! There are also basic lessons taught in the back with illustrations of stick figures to help people grasp the basic doctrines the Bible teaches which are often times hard to understand if stick figure pictures are not provided.

Also, if you're wondering if any of this is a joke, it's not. Literally all those things are in the Bible he gave me. It's great! I still like my LDS Edition of the King James Bible better though.

Haha we found Leif because he's the landlord for another one of our friends. He answered the door and told us that our friend was asleep. We were disappointed but it started a conversation and led to him giving us a Bible and talking about his conversion and all sorts of stuff. At the end I asked if he could say a prayer to bless him and to show our thankfulness to God and he said no :( I asked why and he said he doesn't accept prayers from others. Awkward. I asked him if he would say one for us and he lit up and said yeah of course! Then he put his hand on my shoulder and the other one on Elder Burtons and gathered us in a circle. This was made slightly awkward due to the fact that he wasn't wearing a shirt. Just imagine the guy from the picture... shirtless... in a sort of huddle thing with me and my companion... and you have my Saturday morning. Love it! He said a prayers/blessing and sent us on our way. I guess that's just how they do it in the Pentecostal church. We're gonna meet with him in a week or two. I'm way excited haha =)

Speaking of hard-core people, Elder Bednar will aslo be visting our mission here in a little bit! We just got the news today, and I couldn't be more excited. We're all going to have a big conference down in Copenhagen and get taught by an apostle. O_O Not just any apostle, Elder David A. Bednar! I always loved his talks.

That's a good part of my week. Let's see... I've made a goal to read the Book of Mormon this transfer. I'm reading thirteen pages each day and marking each scripture that shows someone coming closer to Christ. Me and Elder Christiansen have been talking a ton about how you can actually do that because it's not done as easily as people might think. It should be a life-long quest. Anyway, just my thought for the week. I'm loving the first 100 pages so far! 13 pages a day will have me finish in 41 days and the transfer is 42 so I should be just fine =) Gonna be great.

Love you all! I'm learning a ton. Hopefully you were spiritually uplifted somehow by my odd stories. Moral of the story is don't mess with Polish guys in libraries, and always make sure Pentecostal Biker Gang leaders have shirts on before you begin a gospel discussion with them. Take notes people!

The After Party - pictures didn't download

****Wow, I realized I wrote this last week but I saved it as a draft. Sorry! So this is July 7-14th and the next one is this week :) *****

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So mine and Elder Enniss' companionship ended today.

He took off this morning on a train headed to Copenhagen and I got Elder Burton! I'm looking forward to it. There's a lot of potential in the area we are working in especially because we have such a big ward to help us out. Elder Burton is from Ogden if any of you know him?? He has five brothers and one sister. I think all my companions have just had massive families... I picked him up like an hour ago though so we haven't had a ton of time to get to know each other... especially because most of that was getting on and off trains and in and out of cars.

Anyway Roskilde Fest was finished this last week here. The resulting trash heap was incredible

Displaying IMG_1962.JPG

It was just like this all over the place in a couple of massive fields. The rubble was filled with tons of beer destroyed tents and beer and chairs and beer and blankets and beer and tons of trash from snacks and beer and all sorts of other stuff. Mostly beer.

So because transfers are today I have next to no time. But I got to go to a special meeting in Copenhagen this week for the elders that were in my MTC group and go to the temple afterwards! It was a ton of fun and really great. We learned a lot and really bonded. It's been almost a year since I saw those guys all at once!

I know my parents are probably going to tell me I need to write more but I don't have any time :)

I love you all! The work here is going great. Things aren't so hot with Wesley and his family but we're working with them! We also have done a ton of service lately. We're painting these two ladies' house tomorrow and they wanna talk about Joseph Smith. Should be fun.

I'm learning a lot and changing a ton just as I can see people back home changing. I'd love an email from each of you, I enjoy hearing about your lives!
